Spy x Family Manga New Book Cover

SPY x FAMILY manga happens to be the first manga that I read when I came across MANGA Plus for the first time.

And yes, it’s also one of the manga that I’m so looking forward to reading every time there’s a new update on MANGA Plus.

Rather than talking about the manga right away when there were only three chapters at that time, I decided to wait until the first came book came out instead.

Yes, I’m putting the idea of talking about the manga on hold just like what I did for Ron Kamonohashi: Deranged Detective and Monster #8 manga.

The last thing I want is for the manga to end right away after I recommend the manga on my blog.

This is the thing that I’m afraid of the most every time I want to recommend the manga that I read on MANGA Plus.

There’s always a high chance that the manga will end prematurely for many various reasons.

Will SPY x FAMILY manga get an unintended ending like the rest of the manga before it?

To be honest, I doubt that the cancellation is already in the book considering that many people did enjoy reading the manga.

It even ranks high on MANGA Plus too. But not as high as Monster #8, though.

Well, it’s hard to say based on the ranking on MANGA Plus alone. The only thing that will affect the ranking the most is the survey that readers have to submit each week.

It’s the only thing that will determine whether the manga can remain serialized or get booted in a matter of weeks.

Even if the manga will end someday, at least we can expect that the manga will end in a proper way like Jigoraku and Summer Time Rendering since the manga is serialized on JUMP PLUS rather than on the Weekly Shonen Jump.

Okay, I may jinx myself for talking about something that I’m not even sure of.

But that’s the harsh reality of a serialized manga. It can’t run forever unless it’s One Piece.

What SPY x FAMILY is all about

Here’s the book description that I got from the MANGA Plus website.

The master spy codenamed <Twilight> has spent his days on undercover missions, all for the dream of a better world. But one day, he receives a particularly difficult new order from command. For his mission, he must form a temporary family and start a new life?! A Spy/Action/Comedy about a one-of-a-kind family!

What got me to read this manga

What can I say? I love the story where the main character is a spy or in the special force. So, it’s not surprising at all that I will read this manga in a heartbeat.

I have to credit my Trigger Locked series for making me having a penchant for anything spy-related and military-theme anime, manga, and light novels.

I won’t be this gung-ho about it if it’s not because of that.

Does it mean that I won’t be reading SPY x FAMILY manga if I don’t have any penchant for anything to do with spy and military-related things?

Of course, the answer is no. I will still read it because the manga is interesting to read.

I just can’t say no to interesting manga even if it’s in a genre that I don’t usually read.

What makes SPY x FAMILY manga worth reading

When we think of a spy character, we tend to associate the character with fancy gadgets.

But in reality, not all spies are equipped with fancy gadgets during their mission. In fact, possessing fancy gadgets will only make them prone to being discovered that they’re a spy from another country.

Instead of relying on these fancy gadgets, they’re using spy techniques that are simple enough to adopt even for a civilian.

Things like playing the part and blend with the crowd. This is essential for spies especially for the spies who have a non-official cover.

If the foreign government discovers that this person is a spy, this person has to bail himself or herself out. Heck, they can’t even expect that somebody will come and rescue them if they’re in a pinch.

That’s just the way it is.

This is what I find impressive about the manga. The main character, Loid Forger, also known as the code name Agent Twilight is the closest as you can get when it comes to being a spy.

He doesn’t do anything that will draw attention to himself. And he sure does a good job camouflaging himself that he’s a spy by working as a psychiatrist.

He even set up a fake family for the sake of his mission. That’s just how thorough he is when it comes to making sure that the target doesn’t realize that he was spying on him.

It’s hard to know that he’s a spy when there’s nothing out of ordinary about him.

That’s how a spy works in real life.

The only exception is renting a castle. That is the only outrageous thing that Agent Twilight did so far.

Other than that, what you’ll get is a close representation of what a spy is capable of doing. And it’s fun to see a realistic depiction of a spy in a manga.

What I didn’t expect when I read the manga

While the description does say that the manga is a spy comedy manga, it’s not that you’ll be laughing all the time.

What you’ll get instead is a story filled with all of its seriousness with a few chuckles in between.

You can think of the manga similar to Nodame Cantabile. Some scenes can make you burst into laughter in between the serious scenes.

To be honest I’m fine with the manga being serious most of the time. It’s much better that way.

If it’s nothing but comedy all the way through, you’ll get tired of reading it after two chapters.

Who should give the manga a try

If you’re looking for a manga that has a serious plot but with comedy scenes in between, then you’ll enjoy reading SPY x FAMILY manga.
