For some reason, the characters in Edens Zero seems oddly familiar to me.
Well, the main character, Shiki Granbell looks like the younger version of Gray. But he also looks like Romeo as well. I bet that’s how Romeo looks like when he’s slightly older.
And then, we have Rebecca who looks like Lucy with a different hairstyle and hair color.
Let’s not forget that the blue cat is also oddly familiar too. Wait, isn’t that Happy?
If you read Fairy Tail, I’m sure that you recognize these names.
With the characters looking so familiar, does it mean that Edens Zero is Fairy Tail with a different story and setting?
Well, it does look like it on the surface.
But it’s certainly not when you read the book description. It’s a new manga with a new story, setting, and characters.
That should be a no-brainer, right?
What Edens Zero is all about
Here’s the book description for Edens Zero that I took from Bookwalker.
At Granbell Kingdom, an abandoned amusement park, Shiki has lived his entire life among machines. But one day, Rebecca and her cat companion Happy appear at the park’s front gates. Little do these newcomers know that this is the first human contact Granbell has had in a hundred years! As Shiki stumbles his way into making new friends, his former neighbors stir at an opportunity for a robo-rebellion…And when his old homeland becomes too dangerous, Shiki must join Rebecca and Happy on their spaceship and escape into the boundless cosmos.
What attracts me to Edens Zero in the first place
For one, it’s a new manga by Hiro Mashima.
I read Fairy Tail and also Groovy Adventure Rave before. So, it makes sense for me to give Edens Zero a try since it’s a new manga by Hiro Mashima.
And I’m also curious how good Edens Zero is compared to his other works, Fairy Tail and Groovy Adventure Rave.
To be honest, I try my best not to compare the mangaka’s previous work with the new work.
But I can’t help it. It’s just my tendency to compare the new work with any works I came across so far.
And I’m sure that I’m not the only one who does this.
What I didn’t expect when I read the manga
First of all, I didn’t expect the manga to be about space travel with magic involved.
Sure, I already expect that the manga will be a fantasy manga. That seems to be the case with Fairy Tail and Groovy Adventure Rave.
But a space travel manga with magic in it? Not exactly what I had in mind. You don’t see this kind of concept at all in any science fiction manga and light novels. That is as far as I know.
Even Hiro Mashima said it himself that magic in a science fiction manga seems like a bizarre concept. It doesn’t sound like what a science fiction manga would have.
But judging by how the story flows so far, it doesn’t seem like a bad concept to me.
I find that the story is interesting to me despite the strange concept. But hey, that’s how you make the story interesting by creating something that is unthinkable, right?
Another thing that I didn’t expect at all when I read the manga is how some parts of the story can be so heartwarming.
Hiro Mashima does take the story to another notch by making the focal point of the story to be about friendship.
If the story in Fairy Tail is about family bonds without the blood tie, then Edens Zero is about friends who are willing to take the extra mile for the friends they care about.
I won’t lie that the story can make you tear up a little bit. So, be sure to have tissues ready.
And also, should I mention that some of the characters from Fairy Tail are making a cameo appearance in the manga too?
There aren’t that many. But I’m sure that you can spot some of the familiar faces among the crowd.
Who should buy the manga
If you enjoy reading Fairy Tail, then there’s no doubt that you’ll enjoy reading Edens Zero as well.
Like Fairy Tail, Edens Zero also has its own set of mystery that is just as fascinating as the one in Fairy Tail. So, I’m sure that you will enjoy reading Edens Zero as well if you enjoy a story that is filled with the mystery of the universe.
But what about for those who have never read Fairy Tail or any other manga by Hiro Mashima? Should you give this manga a try as well?
If you’re looking for a manga that is light and entertaining and you enjoy the story about friendship, then this manga sure does have that.
But if you’re hoping that the manga will make you on the edge of your seat, then this manga may not have that. It’s hard to say since the manga only has five volumes as I write this. Maybe the story will take you on the edge of your seat. But so far, I don’t see anything that makes me feel that way.
Keep in mind that the manga does contain ecchi jokes. It’s not a lot, but I have to say it upfront considering that some people do see this as a big issue to them.
If you don’t like ecchi jokes, then it’s obvious that this manga is not for you.
