Tales of Berseria

Some of you may already know about Tales of Berseria during a brief introduction in Tales of Zestiria anime. And there are also some who know about it as one of the games from Tales of series.

For those of you who don’t play Tales of Zestiria, you’re probably wondering why we get a brief introduction to Tales of Berseria in Tales of Zestiria anime.

Does the story in Tales of Zestiria and Tales of Berseria relate to one another? Or is it just another Bandai Namco’s ploy to promote the game through Tales of Zestiria anime?

Well, it sure is a ploy for Bandai Namco to promote Tales of Berseria since the game was already around by the time Tales of Zestiria anime was released.

And it’s a clever one too since we get to know two different Tales of series at the same time.

If you’re wondering whether both titles are related to one another, then the answer is yes.

After all, everything that happened in Tales of Zestiria is originated from Tales of Berseria.

If you’re wondering what leads to the event that you saw in Tales of Zestiria, then the answer lies in the event that takes place in Tales of Berseria.

What Tales of Berseria is all about

Here’s the book description that I got from Bookwalker.

In the Holy Midgand Empire, a disease known as daemonblight wreaks havoc on the population, turning its victims into dangerous monsters known as daemons. Velvet Crowe has spent her life under the threat of daemons… Until the day she becomes one herself. After spending three excruciating years in prison, Velvet escapes seeking vengeance. Her goal: To take the life of Artorius Collbrande– the man responsible for her demonic transformation and her brother’s murder.

What got me to read the manga

As someone who plays the game and enjoys it, that seems like a no-brainer for me to get the manga. But at the same time, I’m also curious about the manga version too.

Does the manga is more or less the same as the one in the game? Or do they make it different for the manga version?

That got me wanting to give the manga version a try.

And the fact that the first book from the series was only $0.99 on Amazon Kindle at that time made the decision much easier for me too.

Well, what can I say? I love bargains.

What makes Tales of Berseria worth reading

I admit that the story about revenge isn’t anything new or refreshing.

And the fact that Velvet’s goal is to kill Artorius makes it clear to us how the story will eventually end.

Since we already know how the story will unravel, then what makes Tales of Berseria worth reading in the first place?

Well, I will have to say that it has a lot to do with the plot twist. And it will only start to rear its ugly head when the story itself is closer to the end.

What do I mean by that?

Just imagine yourself to be in Velvet’s shoes when she found out that everything she did turns out to be futile.

And the worst part? It was Artorius himself who said it right in her face.

I’m not going to elaborate on that any further. So, suffice for me to say that the outcome doesn’t look good. And all the things that she did will only make things much worst than it’s already is.

Of course, that isn’t the only thing that makes Tales of Berseria manga worth reading.

With other characters who happen to be a bunch of misfits, you’re bound to see interesting and yet hilarious interaction between them.

Okay, maybe except for Eleanor since she’s a goody-two-shoes. But even with someone like her in the group, you’re bound to see something interesting and funny throughout the story too.

I’m not sure if some of the skits in the game made it to the manga version, but their interaction with one another in the story is already fascinating enough.

If you ask people what makes Tales of series a fun game to play, most of them will say it’s the skits. And I agree with them. The skits sure do make the whole story more interesting.

And lively too.

What I didn’t expect when I read the manga

To be honest, I never expect that the story in the manga to follow as closely as the one in the game.

Well, maybe because I thought that the manga will have the same fate as Tales of Zestiria where some parts of the story in the manga tend to be different than the one in the game.

So, it’s great to know that the story in the manga isn’t that much different from the one in the game.

Sure, there are quite a few scenes in the manga that are different from the one in the game. For one, it’s the scene where Velvet has to fight Rokurou during her escape from Titania. You don’t get to see them fight in the manga.

But a slight change like this doesn’t bother me that much as long as it doesn’t feel odd, especially to those who already played the game.

Who should read Tales of Berseria manga

There’s no doubt that you should read the manga if you already played the game and also enjoy the story as much as I do.

But if you have never played the game before and you already read Tales of Zestiria manga or watched the anime, then you should give this manga a go as well.

Like I said before, both titles relate to one another. If you want a full grasp of the story, then it’s better for you to read Tales of Berseria manga too if you already read Tales of Zestiria manga before.

And what about those who are green to the series? Should you give this manga a try as well?

Of course, the answer is yes. But I recommend you to read Tales of Zestiria manga first before you read this one.
