Ranma 1/2 manga may only be an old manga. But the manga itself is unique in its own way.
Okay, you can say that the idea of having a gender-bender character isn’t anything new. And I’m sure that Ranma 1/2 isn’t the first one to have this kind of character concept.
Despite that, I still enjoy reading the manga to this day.
Maybe it has something to do with it being an old manga?
Well, that could be the case.
What Ranma 1/2 manga is all about
Here’s the book description that I got from Amazon.
One day, teenaged martial artist Ranma Saotome went on a training mission with his father and ended up taking a dive into some cursed springs at a legendary training ground in China. Now, every time he’s splashed with cold water, he changes into a girl. His father, Genma, changes into a panda! What’s a half-guy, half-girl to do? Find out what fueled the worldwide manga boom in beloved creator Rumiko Takahashi’s (InuYasha, Urusei Yatsura, RIN-NE) smash hit of martial arts mayhem, presented remastered and unflipped for the first time.
What got me to read this manga
I heard a lot about Ranma 1/2 manga for such a long time. But I never paid much attention to it until I bought the manga in Malay.
When I think about it, I was glad that I was able to read the manga until the end, unlike Gash Bell manga where I only managed to read the manga until Vol. 9.
Assuming that I only managed to read the manga halfway, will I consider continue with reading the manga?
I will say yes. For one it’s because I’m curious about the ending. Another reason is because I enjoy reading the manga.
I won’t be reading the manga more than once if I didn’t like it.
What makes Ranma 1/2 manga worth reading
I’ll be the first to admit that I wasn’t into a story with the gender-bender character. And certainly not a comedy manga since it’s not the kind of manga that I enjoy reading.
Despite the manga isn’t from my usual genre, I enjoy reading the manga because of how funny it is.
As you can see here, Ranma isn’t the only one who can change into something different with a splash of cold water. Other characters are also sharing a similar fate like him where they will turn into something else when they come in contact with cold water.
With so many characters that can change into something else and the fact that these characters tend to get in Ranma’s way, for the most part, you’re bound to see something that will tickle you fancy.
Of course, the manga isn’t just a pure comedy with no plot at all. It does have a plot and some of them seem dire too. But despite the craziness, you’re bound to see something hilarious happening even in such a dire situation.
Well, that’s Ranma for you.
What I didn’t expect when I read the manga
The thing about the manga is that how chaotic most of the scenes can be when many characters are appearing at the same time. And they’re all trying to get in Ranma’s way.
Of course, Akane has a fair share of chaotic scenes too. But it’s not as chaotic as Ranma’s.
For the most part, we tend to get lost when we have so many characters are appearing at the same time.
But that doesn’t seem to be the case in Ranma 1/2 manga.
Sure, these characters appear for a reason which is to hinder Ranma and Akane for achieving what they need to do.
As a result, their appearance alone is causing a huge mess.
Despite them making a gigantic appearance at the same time, I didn’t have a hard time keeping up with the flow of the story.
It sure is a chaotic mess. But not in a way that you have no idea what’s going on anymore.
Kudos to Rumiko Takahashi for making the chaotic scenes to be as seamless as possible.
Who should read this manga
If you’re a fan of Rumiko Takahashi’s work, then it’s obvious that you should give this manga a try. But if you never read any of her work before and you enjoy reading a comedy manga, then you will find the manga enjoyable to read.
Keep in mind that the manga does contain nudity. But they’re in moderate quantity, though. If you find seeing nudity in the manga off-putting, then you should stay away from this manga.

P.S I may not have a book that has a gender-bender character. But I do have a book that is a bit different than my usual thriller and suspense fanfare.
If you love basketball and enjoy a story that is similar to Slam Dunk but in the form of a light novel, then you may enjoy reading my book, Twisted Destiny.
