I’ve been wanting to talk about Ron Kamonohashi: Deranged Detective manga on my blog for such a long time.
Rather than talking about it when the manga only had around two to five chapters in total at that time, I decided to wait until the first volume of the manga came out.
The last thing I want was for the manga to get canceled as soon as the post went live.
Sure, you can argue here that can never happen considering that Akira Amano is a well-known mangaka. So, there’s no way that a manga by a well-known mangaka to get canceled that easily, right?
Well, I hope that to be true. But the reality is any manga can get canceled even if it’s by a well-known mangaka.
I can only hope that Ron Kamonohashi: Deranged Detective won’t be heading to the same path as the rest of the manga that comes before it.
But seeing how many people enjoy this manga, I doubt that this manga will meet its demise anytime soon.
What Ron Kamonohashi: Deranged Detective is all about
Here’s the book description that I got from MANGA Plus.
This unusual duo brings the hidden truth into the light! Ron Kamonohashi, a private investigator with serious issues, and Totomaru Ishiki, a pure-hearted but dim police detective, team up to solve the most baffling mysteries! A thrilling detective story for a new generation from Akira Amano, creator of “Reborn!” and “Ēldlive”!
What got me to read this manga
Not going to lie here that the reason that got me to read this manga has a lot to do with Akira Amano.
Well, I’m a huge fan of Akira Amano’s work, particularly Reborn! manga. So, it’s not that hard to understand why I would read this manga in a heartbeat.
And the fact that it’s a detective manga is also another reason that got me to read this manga in the first place. I just enjoy reading any manga and light novels in the mystery, thriller, and suspense genre.
That’s the genre that I tend to gravitate to the most. And it’s also the genre that I enjoy writing too. It’s because of this reason that most of my books are in the thriller and suspense genre.
Wondering what kind of manga, light novels, and nonfiction books I tend to recommend on my blog? You can read more about it in this blog post.

What makes Ron Kamonohashi: Deranged Detective manga worth reading
For many of us, we tend to associate detective manga to be something similar to Kindaichi Case Files where the murder cases are complex with so many misdirections. And the atmosphere tends to be heavy and intense too, with people stuck in a secluded area begin to suspect one another.
Well, Ron Kamonohashi: Deranged Detective isn’t that much different, concept-wise. After all, you’ll still be seeing Toto and Ron solving murder cases together. And they’re also in a similar situation as in any detective manga.
But unlike Kindaichi Case Files where the story tends to revolve around the murder cases alone, the murder cases in Ron Kamonohashi: Deranged Detective seem to tie back to what happened to Ron in the past that led him to develop a nasty bad habit.
I won’t spoil you what is Ron’s nasty habit and what happened to him in the past. Suffice to say that his bad habit is destructive to his career as a detective.
Of course, not all cases will tie back to Ron’s past. But some of them do provide the answers to the questions that Ron has been seeking all along.
You can think of the concept for the manga to be similar to Detective School Q. Just like Ron and Toto, Q and the rest will still have to solve the murder cases right in front of them. Some of the cases also tie back to the evil organization that they’ve been keeping an eye on.
The cases in Ron Kamonohashi: Deranged Detective isn’t that complicated either, with most of them will get resolved within two to three chapters.
What’s more, you’ll get to see a bit of the comic relief in between too thanks to Ron’s eccentric personality and his quirky way of doing investigations.
This manga may not be following the typical stereotype of a detective manga. But it’s still a fun manga to read if you prefer a story that has both the serious and the wacky stuff roll into one.
What I didn’t expect when I read the manga
I will say that the comic relief part took me by surprise. Maybe it’s because I was expecting the manga to have the same vibe as the rest of the detective manga out there.
And let’s not forget the dead bodies.
While it’s nothing unusual to see dead bodies in a detective manga, it feels different when you see dead bodies in Akira Amano’s work.
Well, you don’t see any dead bodies at all in many of Akira Amano’s past works. So, it sure does feel different when you see dead bodies in her recent work.
I could be wrong about that since I didn’t get to finish reading Reborn! manga. And I didn’t have any chance to read EIdlive manga at all.
You can also add Ron’s eccentric personality into the mix as well. But I’m going to let it pass since it makes him such an interesting character, as opposed to what we expect a great detective should be.
Who should read this manga
If you’re familiar with Akira Amano’s work, you may find that her recent work to be so much different than her previous ones considering that her previous works tend to be shonen manga for the most part.
Despite the difference, Ron Kamonohashi: Deranged Detective still has the same comic relief styles that are present in many of her past works. So, some of the scenes can feel so much familiar even though it’s in a different story with different characters.
Some of you who aren’t into detective manga that much may feel like wanting to pass this manga because this isn’t the sort of manga you would read.
If that’s you, I will still suggest you give this manga a try. After all, the manga doesn’t follow the usual detective manga stereotype.
Sure, the dead bodies may put you off. But the dead bodies in this manga are still tolerable compared to what you’re bound to see in other detective manga.
But what about those who prefer the typical detective manga? Should you give the manga a try as well?
If you’re okay with a story that isn’t too intense, then you may still find this manga to be an interesting read.
Otherwise, this manga is certainly a pass for you.
