Dr. STONE

Of all the manga I have in my collection, Dr. STONE happens to be one of the manga that I’m so eager to buy when I came across it for the first time. And it’s also one of the manga that I feel like I must buy them in print.

Yes, I have the manga in the print version. In fact, I never missed buying the manga at a discount whenever Kinokuniya was having a flash sale.

Just so you know that I have a Kinokuniya privilege card. That makes buying the manga during sales to be much cheaper since the manga that is licensed in English aren’t cheap in Malaysia.

As much as I love the convenience of having a digital manga, I still prefer to buy manga in print. And I try to do that whenever I can.

What Dr. STONE is all about

Here’s the book description that I got from MANGA Plus.

One fateful day, all of humanity was petrified by a blinding flash of light. After several millennia, high schooler Taiju awakens and finds himself lost in a world of statues. However, he’s not alone! His science-loving friend Senku’s been up and running for a few months and he’s got a grand plan in mind—to kickstart civilization with the power of science!

What got me interested in this manga

I’m not into a post-apocalyptic story that much. But for some strange reason, I find the story in Dr. STONE rather fascinating.

Since the anime was about to come out when I came across the manga at that time, I decided to give the anime a try.

As you already know, the rest is history.

The anime got me hooked and I know from that moment I would get this manga sometimes down the road. And I want to get the manga in print.

What makes Dr. STONE manga worth reading

When you think of shounen manga, the idea of elaborated battle scenes with special abilities tends to be the main focus. And let’s not forget that the story tends to be filled with themes like friendship and overcoming against all odds too.

That seems to be the staple in pretty much most of the shounen manga I came across.

I’ll be honest here that Dr. STONE does have all these elements. But rather than seeing elaborated scenes with the characters possessing abilities beyond our wildest imagination, we have battles using science instead.

Yes, Senku and friends will go into battle as the story in progressing. But rather than using magic or anything equivalent, they’re using science to fight the enemy instead.

What do I mean by that?

In Dr. STONE, you’ll get to see Senku and friends fighting the enemy using the guerilla warfare tactic, developing the technology that allows them to contact their allies in the enemy territory. And not to mention, developing technology that allows them to fight the enemy knowing that the enemy will outnumber them.

Pretty much every problems that they come across are being solved with science. No magic or anything voodoo involved.

And when we talk about science, we’re not talking about the made-up science here. Every facts that are presented in the manga are based on the real thing.

The manga even lists the references in case you’re interested in learning more about all the things that are mentioned in the manga.

What I didn’t expect when I read the manga

To be honest, I never imagined that Senku and friends are able to recreate the modern technology in the stone age. I always thought that it’s impossible to create such technology from scratch.

But Senku and friends prove otherwise.

Just take a look at the phone that Senku created. Sure, he did say that they were going to create a smartphone but minus the smart part. And the phone that they created looks like the early age of the telephone.

But to think that he can recreate the modern technology in the stone world is rather impressive.

It makes me believe that you can bring whatever you think of into reality with the power of imagination.

Remember that Chrome and the old man Kaseki created the water wheel based on their own imagination and also by putting together every invention around them. What’s more, they were able to pull it off even without having Senku to give them any instruction on how to do so.

Not going to lie here that I enjoy reading the manga because it blends facts and fiction together. But I never imagined that it can be inspirational too especially using the power of imagination to make anything possible.

Who should give this manga a try

If you’re looking for a different kind of shounen manga and you love reading a story that blends facts and fiction together, then you may enjoy reading Dr. STONE.

Even if you don’t like science, the manga can still be a fun read too. Who knows that you end up liking science after seeing how much those people in Ishigami Village are having fun after being exposed to the power of science.
