Jiisan Baasan Wakagaeru Anime Blog Banner

I have to admit that the Jiisan Baasan Wakagaeru anime is fun to watch.

With tons of comedic scenes revolving around the couple and the people around them, it makes sense why many of us enjoy watching this anime.

It’s already funny enough to see how people react when they see Shouzou and Ine suddenly turn younger.

And then we get to see them reacting to everything modern around them.

Their reactions are pure gold.

It’s hilarious that their perspective about many things remains the same even after turning young.

Heck, even the way they dress isn’t that much different from what they were before.

With all the witty remarks they made along with the quirky anime OP and ED, it’s hard to believe that a story like this one will have a dark and grim ending.

If you have yet to watch the anime or are catching up with the recent episodes, consider yourself warned since there’ll be spoilers ahead.

What sparks the morbid ending that you see in the Jiisan Baasan Wakagaeru anime

In the later episode of Jiisan Baasan Wakagaeru anime, Shouzou, and Ine began to talk about the amount of sand left in their hourglass.

Despite manipulating the hourglass to change their appearance multiple times, they seem to realize the amount of sand left signifies their lifespans.

While the amount of sand left in Shouzou’s hourglass indicates that he still has two years left, Ine’s hourglass on the one hand paints a devastating situation.

Unlike Shouzou, she only has one week to live.

Terrified of what’s becoming of her in a week, she let Shouzou know about it as they were resting in a shrine after having some fun together at the summer festival.

To their surprise, the deity of the shrine made its appearance while Ine was resting, and was unaware of it.

Knowing that Ine only had a week left until her passing, Shouzou requested the deity to expand her life.

The deity, of course, granted his wish in exchange for Shouzou’s remaining lifespan.

Shouzou agreed to let his remaining lifespan be transferred to Ine’s hourglass if it could help with extending her lifespan.

A week has passed ever since then and Ine seemed relieved when she found out that she was still alive.

Shouzou convinced her that it was only a bad dream and never told her what he actually did to her lifespan.

Months passed by and it was during spring that they finally passed, holding hands together as they rested under the apple tree on their farm.

The ideal till-death-do-us-part kind of situation

In one of the episodes, Ine expressed to Shouzou that she’s scared of living alone and couldn’t imagine living a life without him around.

Shouzou somehow convinced her that he would never allow such a situation to happen to her.

If anything, he will always be by her side no matter what happens to her.

What many of us find this scene ironic is that we all know death isn’t something that we can have full control of.

And before we know it, one of us will have to leave the other person behind someday.

It sure is sad when someone you love leaves you behind out of a sudden and you’re now all alone.

So, what will be the best solution then?

In an ideal situation, that would be to die together as a couple, of course.

Thus, the morbid ending that you see in the Jiisan Baasan Wakagaeru anime.

While the story already hints at what will befall Shouzou and Ine after their time runs out, it can still be hard for many of us to fathom considering how light-hearted the story is for the most part.

Of course, you can argue that Shinigami Bocchan to Kuro Maid has a dark theme as well.

But at the very least, Shinigami Bocchan to Kuro Maid ends on a happy note, unlike Jiisan Baasan Wakagaeru where the happy ending takes a different twist.

What about the ending in the manga?

I always say this and I will say it again – if you want to judge the story, judge it based on the source material, not the adaptation.

So, how does the story in the manga fare?

Does it end the same way as the one in the anime?

Or does the ending we see in the anime is a fabricated one, not the actual ending?

Sad to say, I can’t seem to find any information about the manga ending anywhere.

Heck, I don’t even know whether the manga is still ongoing or already ended at this point.

Assuming that the manga is ongoing, I won’t be surprised that the ending we see in the anime isn’t even the actual ending.

That’s not unusual for the anime studio to come up with its own ending considering that the anime can’t continue for eternity.

It needs to end at some point, even if the ending can be a grim one to some.

Judging from the manga concept, I won’t find it surprising at all that the manga follows the likes of manga like Doraemon and Shin-Chan.

You know, something like The Simpsons where Bart and Lisa will always remain in the elementary school and Maggie will remain as a toddler even if the show has been around for decades.

But this time around, we follow Shouzou’s and Ine’s journey in discovering all the new things they get to experience now that they turn young again.

Well, I could be wrong about it.

But it doesn’t seem that far off, considering it’s a web manga.

It doesn’t need to have a definitive format where the story will continue for as long as the mangaka is alive.

It’s not so bad, after all

While the anime may have a different take on what a happy ending should be, the anime does have a chock of insights that we can ponder.

For one, how the story portrays the tight-knit relationship between them and also people around them, particularly their children and grandchildren.

And let’s not forget how they love to dote on their grandchildren so much, particularly Shouzou.

But even if they don’t, there’s no reason for their grandchildren to not come over to their house when they always welcome them with open hearts and warm smiles.

The anime may not have the kind of ending you would expect.

But the anime is indeed worth watching especially if you’re curious about how a healthy relationship between a spouse, children, grandchildren, and even people around you should be.

P.S. I may not have a book where the characters turn young again after eating a golden apple. But I do have a book where the characters end up together as a couple after going through a tough situation.

If that’s your kind of story, then I highly recommend you have a look at my psychological suspense light novel, The Diary of Modern Cinderella.
