Kiss Him Not Me Manga Cover

It’s not unusual for me to know about the Kiss Him, Not Me manga through the anime.

But here’s the funny part – I didn’t care to watch the anime when it came out.

That seems strange considering I’m the type of person who watches anything that I find interesting.

Yes, even in a genre that I don’t enjoy much such as fantasy, isekai, and anything shoujo and josei anime.

Why I didn’t care to watch the anime when it came out years ago is beyond me.

But I don’t feel bad about not watching it since we all know the anime tends to end the story midway.

And fingers crossed if the anime will ever get the Hataraku Maou-sama treatment.

That’s my beef with the anime adaptation, particularly the non-mainstream ones.

Fortunately, the manga is already completed a few years after the anime ends.

If you’re looking for a completed manga series, this is one of them.

What Kiss Him, Not Me manga is all about

Here’s the book description that I got from Bookwalker.

Hi there! My name is Serinuma Kae.
I’m the kind of girl who loves checking out boys and fantasizing about them getting friendly (and more) with each other? I’m what you might call a fujoshi.
One day, my beloved (yes, he’s an anime character) died, and the shock of it all was more than I could have ever prepared for! My grief over his passing resulted in some ridiculous weight loss!
And you won’t believe what happened next! Soon after my change, the four most divinely gorgeous boys in my school asked me out on dates! I accepted them all, and you’d think I’d be happy with my sudden popularity, but the truth is, my heart only yearns for a prince to be next to his prince. Ahh, yes, boys, I’d much prefer that you turn your affections elsewhere and KISS HIM, NOT ME!

What got me to read this manga

Okay, I admit that many of the manga and light novels that I recommend on my blog are the ones that I already watched the anime before.

And as you already know, that’s certainly not the case with this manga.

So, what got me to read the manga, save for the fact that I got the manga for free when there was a promotion on Bookwalker?

Well, it’s because of the premise, of course.

Keep in mind that I don’t necessarily read the manga because I already watched the anime before.

There are many manga and light novels that I read that don’t even have an anime adaptation, with Peach Heaven being one of them.

If you’re looking for another completed manga to add to your reading list, this is another one.

What makes Kiss Him, Not Me manga worth reading

Let’s face it, having the fujoshi as the main character isn’t anything new, with Genshiken Nidaime and Ghostbuster Osamu to name a few.

And then we also have Wotakoi where the female characters in the story are open about their interest in BL.

So, what makes the story in Kiss Him, Not Me different from the manga that comes before and after it?

Well, I will say it’s the life lessons that the manga is trying to impart here.

While being a nerd isn’t something that comes with a negative connotation in other societies, it sure is in Japanese society.

It’s no wonder why Serinuma has to hide the fact that she’s an otaku when she’s dating all of them at once.

Yes, she couldn’t care less about any of them. But she still doesn’t want any of them to have a bad impression of her.

You can guess what happened when she tried so hard to keep a lid on her inner fujoshi.

She ended up blowing up her own cover. And she did it in a comical fashion too.

Amazingly enough, none of the guys are batting eyes at her when she openly admits that she’s an otaku.

They even said that she looked more alive now that she was being honest about being one.

Of course, the lesson you see here is only the tip of the iceberg. You can expect to see more of it as the story progresses, with some comical moments in between.

Yes, Kiss Him, Not Me isn’t that much different from your typical comedy shoujo manga despite having a serious theme.

What I didn’t expect when I read the manga

For some reason, the guys seem surprisingly lax when they find out about Serinuma being an otaku.

Well, it could be just another way for the mangaka to simplify the situation between Serinuma and those guys.

But it can also be because they’re so in love with Serinuma that they accept her for who she is.

Another thing I don’t expect is it doesn’t take that long for them to discover Serinuma’s secret.

I assume it’ll take about five chapters or so for her little secret to slip through the crack.

Well, it can mean that Serinuma can’t seem to contain herself any longer especially when pretending to be someone else is eating her alive.

Or it can also mean that she doesn’t care about them knowing about it in the end since she has no interest in impressing any of them.

Who should read the manga?

If you already watched the anime and would like to know who Serinuma will end up with, then you should read the manga, hands down.

But even if you don’t, it’s still a must-read if you’re into a shoujo manga that features a female otaku as the main character.
