MANGA Plus Blog Banner

If you’ve been reading my blog long enough, you already know how much I recommend everyone to give MANGA Plus a try.

Well, what’s not to love about the app if it allows you to read manga for free legally?

Moreover, it’s not as restricted as Shonen Jump and Viz Media apps too since you can read the manga on MANGA Plus regardless of where you live.

But the app’s recent update somehow doesn’t seem to bode well with many people.

For one, the comment section for each chapter.

What makes them think hiding the comment section instead of having it displayed right after the chapter ends is a good idea is beyond me.

But the comment section isn’t the only glow-up that gets people to loathe the recent update.

It’s the access to the chapters that get people to rile up the most.

The brand-new MANGA Plus app

So, what is it that causes people to be upset about the recent changes, you ask?

Well, it’s none other than the access to all chapters.

Back then, you could read the first and the final three chapters of the completed and ongoing manga as many times as you wanted.

But now?

You can only read the first and the recent few chapters only once.

The same goes for the completed manga as well. But unlike the ongoing manga, you can only read the first three chapters once.

What about the chapters in between then?

Is there a way for you to gain access to those chapters?

Well, if you want to read those chapters in between, then you will need to upgrade to their paid subscription plans.

Didn’t see that coming, did you?

The devil is in the detail

There are two subscription plans to choose from, which is the Standard and Deluxe plan.

The Standard plan allows you to read the chapters in between for the ongoing manga whereas the Deluxe plan allows you to read all the ongoing and completed manga chapters.

The best part about the subscription plan is that it’s not that expensive considering that the Standard plan will only cost you $1.99 per month.

And if you’re thinking about getting the Deluxe plan instead? It will only cost you $4.99 per month.

While the price stated is in USD, the billing will be in your local currency, though.

So, rest assured if you’re someone who prefers to pay in local currency to avoid the currency exchange fluctuation.

Just be sure you already link your credit card to your Apple ID or Google Account and you’re good to go.

My thoughts about the recent changes

Here’s the thing about the app in general – I kind of see it coming from the start.

Sure, you can read the chapters in between once for the ongoing manga before they roll out the update.

But what about the chapters in between for the completed manga then?

Unlike the ongoing manga, there’s no way for you to read the chapters in between.

If they’re going to offer unlimited access to the chapters in between, then the best way to go about it is to offer a subscription upgrade, right?

Despite already seeing it coming, I wasn’t too happy about it when they first rolled out the changes.

Imagine my shock when I saw all the latest chapters of the manga I was reading were locked behind a paywall.

It’s no wonder that I would be upset about it.

Thankfully, the basic plan allows you to read the recent chapters for free, not just the first few chapters.

But I still give the paid plan a try since the Standard plan comes with a 30-day free trial.

Will I be upgrading to any of the plans?

As you can already tell, the answer to that question is no, at least for the time being.

It’s not that I’m being a cheapskate or anything. It’s just that it’s a waste for me to upgrade when the only things I read are the recent chapters, nothing else.

Does it mean I will never consider upgrading to any of the plans at all?

Of course, the answer is no.

If I ever upgrade, I’ll opt for the Deluxe plan since I have a few completed manga that I didn’t get to read anymore because of the recent change.

One of them is Haikyu!!

When will I upgrade to the Deluxe plan is something that I’m not sure of.

But one thing I know for sure is it’s certainly not for the time being.

I’m being swarmed with way too many books to read at the moment.

So, the Deluxe plan upgrade will have to wait.

Should you consider upgrading to the paid plan?

If you’re like me who have been reading most of the manga from the beginning and only want to read the recent chapter, then you don’t need to upgrade to the paid subscription.

But what if you enjoy the manga and want to read beyond the first three chapters?

Well, I don’t see any reason for you not to upgrade to the paid plan.

Yes, I won’t deny it costs you a little.

But it still costs you less when you compare it to buying an individual volume, print or digital.

And if you don’t like it?

You can always cancel the subscription at any time you want. There’s no shame in doing that if you don’t like the app for whatever reason.

P.S. Are you in the mood to read light novels, particularly in the thriller and suspense genre?

If that’s you, consider giving my light novels a try.
