Tenkuu Shinpan English Book Cover

Just like in my post about Kyokou Suiri manga, I have to forgo using the English title and used the title Tenkuu Shinpan on the blog instead.

While it makes sense to use Kyokou Suiri as a title since the English title looks odd as a link, that doesn’t seem to be the case for High-Rise Invasion, right?

Well, you’re right about that. There’s nothing unusual about the title High-Rise Invasion.

It’s just that my reason for using Tenkuu Shinpan as a title has more to do with the title being the search term that people use when they’re searching for this manga online.

Here I am, thinking that people will use the English title when they’re searching for this manga, not the Japanese title.

That’s easier to remember than the name Tenkuu Shinpan, don’t you think?

Just so you know that I’ll be using the Japanese title throughout the blog post.

But the context will still be referring to the English version of the manga, which is called High-Rise Invasion in English.

And if you’re interested in watching the anime, you have better luck of finding the anime on Netflix if you use the English title, though.

I doubt that you can find the anime if you use the Japanese title.

I can’t say for sure if the anime adaptation is a faithful adaptation of the manga. But all I can say is I won’t be surprised that it only covers not even half of the story.

If you did watch the anime, let me know your thoughts about the anime in the comment below.

What Tenkuu Shinpan is all about

Here’s the book description that I got from Bookwalker.

On the roof of a high-rise building, a young girl named Yuri witnesses a masked figure split a man’s head open with an axe! It’s not exactly an everyday occurrence for a high schooler, but things only get weirder from there. Yuri soon finds herself in a strange world of skyscrapers with only two options for escape–fight past the mysterious masked figures or leap to her death!

What got me to read this manga

Believe it or not, it was my niece who introduced the manga to me.

Okay, I won’t deny that I don’t usually take any recommendations from my niece that much. But it’s kind of hard for me to resist when it’s a story that revolves around dead bodies.

Well, I’m a thriller author, anyway. Any story that has people dying in it sure does pique my interest.

If you’re wondering what else that would pique my interest, you can read more about it right here.

But here’s the best part. Both of us knew about this manga through scanlations.

Yes, the thing that the manga industry loathes the most.

Believe me, I wouldn’t even know that the manga exists if it’s not because of the scanlations.

Okay, I may know about it because of the anime or through Anichart. But if it doesn’t get any anime adaptation, my best bet will still be through the scanlations or the free manga app like MANGA Plus.

Just so you know that I eventually did buy the manga in the end.

It’s just that have to get the manga in digital format since the print version is no longer available anywhere else.

What makes Tenkuu Shinpan manga worth reading

When you take a look at the book description for Tenkuu Shinpan, you may find that the manga isn’t that much different from the manga that has a similar premise.

Well, we have the main character who happens to get stuck in an unknown world, filled with weird people who are coming after one another.

But this manga however takes things to another notch.

Rather than the survival taking place on the ground, the whole shenanigan takes place in the high-rise buildings instead.

And there’s no way for them to reach the ground. Pretty much every entrance that leads to the ground got blocked.

The only option left for them is to cross to the other building through a suspension bridge. Or just jump off the building if despair is taking over you.

Even with a bridge nearby, it still won’t be a walk in the park when we have masked people who are more than eager to kill anyone within their vicinity.

So, what makes this manga worth reading then? There’s more to it than a bunch of masked people on a killing spree, right?

I will say it’s the mysteries of the world itself.

Things like the purpose of its existence, how people ended up in this strange world, and who are these masked people.

And of course, how will Yuri survive in this messed-up world? Will she be able to survive until she rendezvouses with her brother who happens to be in the same world as her?

Considering that Yuri is only your typical high-schooler, it’s interesting to see all the things that she has to do just to survive while trying to make sense of the messed-up world.

What I didn’t expect when I read the manga

For some reason, I can’t help but think that this manga somehow reminded me of The Vertical World.

The only difference is that this manga is littered with dead bodies.

Maybe it has something to do with you having to go into the rabbit holes, trying to figure out the mysteries behind all the things that happened to them.

But don’t worry. As much as the manga goes into rabbit holes, the story isn’t as complicated as the one in The Vertical World.

I will say that The Vertical World takes the cake when it comes to manga that has a confusing story but it’s still intriguing enough for you to continue reading.

Who should read the manga?

Yes, I admit that this manga isn’t for the faint-hearted considering how violent some of the scenes can be.

But if you don’t find the violence to be disturbing and you do find the premise behind the manga interesting, then you may find this manga to be enjoyable.

And if you’re into survival horror manga, then there’s no doubt that this is another manga that you should add to your reading list.

Another reason why you should add it to your reading list? It’s a completed manga series.

So, no more waiting for the next book in the series to come out.
